The Sta-Rite C1-271P is the pump diffuser covering 1-1/2 HP through 3 HP. One part number spans that whole range, which is worth knowing because the impeller behind it is horsepower specific and the diffuser is not.
What the diffuser does
The impeller throws water outward at speed. The diffuser is the shaped housing that catches it and turns that speed into the pressure the filter and returns actually see. When it cracks, warps from heat, or loses the fit around the impeller hub, water recirculates inside the pump instead of leaving it. The symptom is a pump that sounds normal and moves noticeably less water.
