What the base does

The base carries the motor and holds it square to the wet end. When it corrodes through or cracks, the motor settles slightly out of line and the shaft no longer runs true. That misalignment quietly chews through shaft seals and can put the impeller out of position, so a failing base is worth replacing rather than shimming.
