Why the trap lid matters
Everything upstream of the impeller is under suction, and the trap lid is the largest removable joint on that side. It is therefore the first place a pump draws air. A lid that has crazed, cracked or warped will keep water in while the pump runs but let air in as soon as prime is lost, and the pump then struggles to pull itself back.
What to check while it is off
Wipe the sealing seat clean and look at the o-ring. Grit on the seat or a flattened, dried out o-ring produces exactly the same air leak as a broken lid, and both are worth ruling out at the same time. Measure the lid you are removing to confirm the 6 inch size before ordering.
