Get the rating right
Impellers across a pump family look nearly identical and are not interchangeable. The vane geometry is what sets the flow the pump produces at a given motor speed, so an impeller from the wrong rating either chokes the pump or lets the motor work harder than it was matched for. Read the horsepower and the full rate or up rate designation off the pump label rather than guessing from the motor.
Symptoms of a bad impeller
Weak returns with a clean filter and a clean basket usually means the impeller. Either the vanes are packed with debris that has worked past the basket, or they are worn open after years of running, and either way the pump moves less water than the system was designed around. Heaters and cleaners feel it first.
While the pump is apart
The shaft seal sits directly behind the impeller and can only be reached with the impeller off. Change both in the same teardown. It costs very little more and it means the pump is not coming apart again in a year for the half of the job you skipped.
