A union at each pump port lets you take the pump out for a seal, an impeller or a motor without sawing into the plumbing and rebuilding it afterwards.
Do I need thread sealant?
Threaded pool plumbing normally gets a sealant rated for it. Follow the pump instructions and do not overtighten plastic threads.
