Product details

The Pentair 355618Z is the diffuser for SuperFlo and SuperMax pool and spa inground pumps and for the Pinnacle high flow inground pump, in the 1.5 HP and 2 HP sizes. It also fits Pentair SuperFlo VS pumps manufactured before 6/17/19.

Why a diffuser matters

The diffuser caps the impeller and shapes the water on its way through the pump. It has to seal cleanly against the impeller face for the pump to build pressure. When the diffuser cracks, warps from a dry run, or wears at the sealing face, water simply circulates inside the volute instead of heading out to the filter. The pump sounds normal and the numbers on the filter gauge say otherwise.

Check the date on a variable speed pump

The 1.5 HP and 2 HP fitment is straightforward on the standard pumps. On a SuperFlo VS, the cutoff matters: this part covers units built before 6/17/19, so read the manufacture date on the pump label before ordering.

While the pump is open

The diffuser o-ring and the hex head screw that retains the diffuser are separate parts. Both are cheap, both are already exposed once the housing is off, and neither is worth a second teardown.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Will this fit my SuperFlo VS?
It fits SuperFlo VS pumps manufactured before 6/17/19. Check the build date on the pump label, because Pentair changed the part after that date.
Does one diffuser cover both 1.5 HP and 2 HP?
Yes. Pentair lists 355618Z for 1-1/2 HP through 2 HP.
Does the o-ring come with it?
No. The diffuser o-ring and the hex head screw that holds the diffuser are separate parts, and both are worth replacing while the pump is apart.
What does the diffuser actually do?
It sits over the impeller and directs water into and out of it. When it cracks or the sealing face wears, water recirculates inside the pump instead of going out to the filter, and flow drops.
