Why a diffuser matters
The diffuser caps the impeller and shapes the water on its way through the pump. It has to seal cleanly against the impeller face for the pump to build pressure. When the diffuser cracks, warps from a dry run, or wears at the sealing face, water simply circulates inside the volute instead of heading out to the filter. The pump sounds normal and the numbers on the filter gauge say otherwise.
Check the date on a variable speed pump
The 1.5 HP and 2 HP fitment is straightforward on the standard pumps. On a SuperFlo VS, the cutoff matters: this part covers units built before 6/17/19, so read the manufacture date on the pump label before ordering.
While the pump is open
The diffuser o-ring and the hex head screw that retains the diffuser are separate parts. Both are cheap, both are already exposed once the housing is off, and neither is worth a second teardown.
