What the sealplate does
It is the wall between the water and the motor. The motor bolts to it, the volute seals against it, and it holds the stationary half of the shaft seal square to the shaft. Everything about whether the pump stays dry depends on that plate being flat and its seal bore undamaged.
When to replace it
Cracks, warping and a chewed seal bore are the reasons it comes out. If a pump has been through a new shaft seal and still weeps at the motor, the sealplate is usually where the problem actually is. Order the shaft seal at the same time, since it should not be reused once removed.
