The Pentair 354545S is a Type 6 mechanical shaft seal set for a 5/8 inch motor shaft. What the seal does
The shaft seal is the barrier between wet end and motor. Two lapped faces run against each other, one spinning with the shaft and one held still in the seal plate, and the film of water between them is all that separates pool water from the motor bearings. When that pair wears, the first sign is a drip under the motor end of the pump, and the last sign is a seized motor.
Materials and construction
Pentair specifies Buna and graphitic plastic for this seal. It cross references to the US Seal PS-200, so a shop quoting a PS-200 is quoting the same seal.
Replace both halves
This is sold as a set for a reason. The two faces wear into each other, and fitting a new rotating half against an old ceramic seat will weep almost immediately. Change the pair, keep the faces clean and dry going in, and lubricate only the elastomer, never the lapped faces.
