What the base does
The base is the piece the pump sits on and bolts down through. It sets the pump at the right height so the suction and discharge line up with the plumbing that was cut for them, and it holds everything square while the motor runs.
When to replace it
Bases crack from vibration, from freeze damage and from being levered around during a motor change. Once one is broken the pump no longer sits level, and the load it should be carrying goes into the unions and the pipe. A new base is a small part next to the leak that follows.
