Product details

The Pentair 355147 is the impeller for Challenger high pressure pumps, sized for the 1/2 HP full rated and 3/4 HP up rated models.

What the impeller does

It is the spinning part that moves the water. The impeller has to match the horsepower of the motor driving it, which is why Pentair builds a separate impeller for each rating in the range. Fitting the wrong one leaves the pump either underperforming or loading the motor.

Symptoms of a bad impeller

Weak return flow with a clean pump basket and a clean filter is the classic sign. Sometimes it is debris packed into the vanes, which cleans out. Sometimes the vanes themselves have worn or broken, and no amount of cleaning brings the flow back.

While the pump is open

The mechanical seal is behind the impeller and has to be disturbed to remove it, and the diffuser sits in front. Both are worth inspecting while the pump is apart so the job is done once.

Which pumps take this impeller?
Pentair Challenger high pressure models, at the 1/2 HP full rated and 3/4 HP up rated size.
What is the difference between full rated and up rated?
It is how the motor horsepower is stated. A 1/2 HP full rated motor and a 3/4 HP up rated motor do comparable work, and both use this impeller.
Should I change the seal too?
It is worth doing. The mechanical seal sits directly behind the impeller and comes apart with it, so replacing both at once saves opening the pump twice.
How do I know the impeller is the problem?
Low flow with a clean basket and a clean filter usually points at a blocked or worn impeller. Debris packed into the vanes is common, and a worn impeller can look intact while it has lost its edges.
