What it holds
The band clamp pulls the front housing against the seal plate and holds that joint tight. Everything sealing at that face depends on the clamp being able to draw down evenly, which is why a distorted band or seized hardware turns into a persistent leak that no amount of tightening fixes.
When to change it
Band clamps live outdoors, wet, and often on a pad that gets splashed with chemicals. Corroded bolts and rusted bands are a normal find once a Challenger is opened for service. If the old clamp will not torque evenly or the hardware is fighting you, replace the assembly while the pump is already apart.
