What the diffuser does
The diffuser sits around the impeller and converts the velocity the impeller creates into pressure before the water leaves the volute. Its clearance to the impeller is what determines how much of the motor work actually reaches the plumbing, which is why the two parts are matched by horsepower and why a worn or cracked diffuser shows up as flow the pump should be making but is not.
