Product details

The Pentair 400023Z is the 5 HP impeller assembly for WhisperFloXF and Max-E-ProXF pumps. It fits the XFET-20, XFE-20, XFJ-20 and XFK-20 models in both families.

What the impeller does

It is the rotating disc inside the pump that takes energy from the motor and puts it into the water. Everything downstream, the flow to the filter, the pressure at the returns, the suction that runs a cleaner, comes from this one part turning cleanly inside the volute.

Matching the horsepower

Impellers are sized to the motor. This one is the 5 HP part. Fitting a different size changes the flow curve the pump was designed around, so match the horsepower to what is on your motor plate.

Signs it needs replacing

Weak return flow when the filter is clean and the pump is fully primed is the classic symptom. Open the wet end and you typically find vanes packed with debris, worn thin, or broken away. Because the pump has to come apart to reach the impeller, it is worth having the shaft seal and the seal plate o-ring on hand for the same job.

WhisperFloXF models XFET-20, XFE-20, XFJ-20 and XFK-20, and Max-E-ProXF models XFET-20, XFE-20, XFJ-20 and XFK-20.
Does the horsepower have to match?
Yes. The impeller is matched to the motor output, so a 5 HP pump takes the 5 HP impeller. Fitting the wrong size changes the flow the pump was engineered to deliver.
What does the impeller actually do?
It is the rotating disc inside the pump that transfers energy from the motor into the water, which is what creates flow and pressure.
How do I know mine has failed?
Weak return flow with a clean filter and a full basket of prime, or a pump that runs but never builds pressure. Vanes packed with debris or broken off are what you find when the housing comes apart.
