What it does
The seal plate is the wall between the wet end and the motor. The motor shaft passes through it, the shaft seal sits in it, and the impeller runs just in front of it. A hairline crack in the plate, or a seal bore chewed out by a spun seal, will keep eating new shaft seals until the plate itself is replaced.
