What the diffuser does
The impeller throws water outward at speed. The diffuser sits over it and converts that velocity into pressure, funneling flow into the volute and out the discharge. It also sets the close running clearance around the impeller eye. When that clearance opens up, or the diffuser body cracks, water simply circulates inside the pump instead of leaving it, and the pump loses head while still sounding perfectly normal.
Fitting
Reaching the diffuser means opening the wet end, which is the right moment to look at everything else in there. Check the diffuser o-ring, the shaft seal and the impeller for wear before reassembly, and replace anything questionable while the pump is apart.
