The Pentair 400006 is the lid and locking ring assembly for the XF Series pumps, covering both the WhisperFlo XF and the IntelliFlo XF variable speed models. It is the genuine Pentair part.
What the lid does
The strainer pot has to hold a vacuum for the pump to stay primed. That job falls to the clear lid and the ring that clamps it down. When the lid crazes, cracks or stops seating flat, air works its way in, the pot will not fill and the pump runs noisy and dry looking even though the valves are open.
Buying it as an assembly
Lid and ring are sold together here, which avoids the common problem of a new lid meeting an old ring that has gone brittle at the threads. Turn the ring down by hand only, since overtightening is what splits rings in the first place.
