The Pentair 071734S is the shaft seal kit for WhisperFlo WFE and IntelliFlo pool pumps. It is the genuine Pentair part, and Pentair notes it may fit other pump models as well.
What the shaft seal does
The seal rides on the motor shaft behind the impeller and keeps pool water on the wet end where it belongs. When it wears, water tracks along the shaft and drips out between the pump housing and the motor. Left alone, that water finds the motor bearings and turns a small part into a large one.
Fitting it
The seal sits behind the impeller, so the wet end has to be opened and the impeller removed. Since the pump is already apart, most people replace the housing and lid o-rings at the same time.
Make it last
Shaft seals do not survive dry running. If the pump has been losing prime or pulling air on the suction side, sort that out before fitting the new seal.
