What it is
Every pump union is three pieces: the tail that solvent welds to the pipe, the o-ring that seals, and the nut that pulls the two faces together. The nut carries all the clamping load, and it is the piece that suffers. Years of sun make the plastic brittle, and one hard pull with a wrench splits it at the thread.
Replacing it
Shut the pump down, relieve pressure, unthread the old collar and fit the new one. It is a job that stays at the union: nothing gets cut and nothing gets glued.
