Quick overview

  • Pentair part 071422 The o-ring that seals the pump cover on the older Purex Triton and WhisperFlo bodies.
  • Fits pumps built before 11/1998 The source data limits this o-ring to WhisperFlo and Purex Triton pumps manufactured prior to 11/1998.
  • 5-3/4 inch inside diameter Measure the old ring before ordering, since the newer cam and lock lids use a different size.
  • Stops air leaks at the lid A hard or cracked cover o-ring lets the pump pull air, which shows up as a low or foamy basket.
  • Cheap insurance during a rebuild Worth changing any time the lid is off for basket, seal or impeller work.
  • Lubricate before fitting A thin film of pool grade silicone o-ring lubricant keeps the ring seated and makes the lid easier to remove next time.

Product details

The Pentair 071422 is the cover o-ring for older Purex Triton and WhisperFlo pumps, the ones manufactured prior to 11/1998. It measures 5-3/4 inches across the inside.

What it does

The cover o-ring is the only thing sealing the strainer pot lid against atmosphere. When the pump runs it pulls a vacuum in that pot, so a ring that has gone hard, flat or cracked lets air straight in. The usual symptoms are a basket that will not fill, a pump that loses prime after it shuts off, or foam and bubbles at the returns.

Before you order

Pentair changed the pump lid over the years, so measure the ring you are replacing. This one is the 5-3/4 inch inside diameter size for the pre 11/1998 bodies. Fit it clean and dry, then add a thin film of silicone o-ring lubricant intended for pool equipment. Petroleum grease will swell the rubber and shorten its life.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Which pumps does this o-ring fit?
Pentair Purex Triton and WhisperFlo pumps manufactured prior to 11/1998. Later pumps use a different cover seal.
How do I check the size?
The listed inside diameter is 5-3/4 inches. Pull the old o-ring and measure across the inside of the ring before ordering.
Why does my pump lose prime?
A dried out or flattened cover o-ring is one of the most common causes. Air drawn in past the lid keeps the basket from filling.
Should I grease it?
Yes. A light coat of silicone o-ring lubricant made for pool use helps it seat evenly and keeps the lid from sticking.
