The joint it seals
The gasket sits between the pump housing and the seal plate, holding the two halves of the wet end together against pressure. Heat, chlorine and age take the flexibility out of it, and once it is hard and flat it no longer fills its groove. The result is a slow drip from the seam that is easy to blame on the shaft seal.
Molded form
This is a molded gasket, so it holds its shape and seats into the groove rather than needing to be stretched into line. That makes reassembly quicker and less prone to pinching.
Best time to change it
Any time the pump comes apart. If you are already in there for a shaft seal or an impeller, replacing this gasket costs very little and removes the most likely reason you would have to open the pump again.
