Product details

The Pentair 071652Z is the impeller set screw used on select Pentair pool pumps. It is 1/4-20 by 1 in. with a Phillips head and, importantly, a left hand thread.

The left hand thread

This screw loosens clockwise. Pump impellers spin in a direction that would back a normal screw out, so the thread is reversed to keep it tight. Anyone who does not know that ends up cranking the screw harder into the impeller and rounding out the head.

What it holds

The set screw locks the impeller onto the motor shaft. If it works loose the impeller can spin on the shaft and the pump loses flow, so it is worth fitting a fresh screw whenever the impeller comes off rather than reusing a worn one.

Which way do I turn it?

Clockwise to loosen. It is a left hand thread, so turning it counterclockwise, the usual loosening direction, tightens it instead.
