Quick overview

  • Left hand thread It loosens clockwise. Turning it the usual way only tightens it against the impeller.
  • Size 1/4-20 thread, 1 in. long, Phillips head.
  • Holds the impeller The set screw is what locks the impeller to the motor shaft.
  • Fits several Pentair pumps Used on select pumps including IntelliFlo VS 3050 and VF, and WhisperFlo WF and WFE models.
  • Genuine Pentair Factory part 071652Z.
  • Cheap insurance The head strips easily on an old screw, so fit a new one whenever the impeller comes off.

Product details

The Pentair 071652Z is the impeller set screw used on select Pentair pool pumps. It is 1/4-20 by 1 in. with a Phillips head and, importantly, a left hand thread.

The left hand thread

This screw loosens clockwise. Pump impellers spin in a direction that would back a normal screw out, so the thread is reversed to keep it tight. Anyone who does not know that ends up cranking the screw harder into the impeller and rounding out the head.

What it holds

The set screw locks the impeller onto the motor shaft. If it works loose the impeller can spin on the shaft and the pump loses flow, so it is worth fitting a fresh screw whenever the impeller comes off rather than reusing a worn one.

Fitment

It is used across a number of Pentair pumps, including IntelliFlo VS 3050 and VF models and WhisperFlo WF and WFE models.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Which way do I turn it?
Clockwise to loosen. It is a left hand thread, so turning it counterclockwise, the usual loosening direction, tightens it instead.
What size is it?
1/4-20 thread, 1 in. long, with a Phillips head.
Which pumps use it?
Select Pentair pumps, including the IntelliFlo VS 3050 and VF models and the WhisperFlo WF and WFE models. Check your parts breakdown if you are unsure.
Why does the old one strip?
Years of pool water and the reversed thread make it easy to cam out a Phillips head. Use a well fitting driver, and replace the screw rather than reusing a chewed one.
