Product details

The Pentair 072928Z is the black diffuser assembly for 3 HP WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo pool pumps. It is the genuine Pentair part, also listed as 072928.

What the diffuser does

The impeller throws water outward at speed. The diffuser wraps around it and slows that water down on its way into the volute, which turns velocity into pressure. Without a good diffuser the pump spins and moves water, but it does not build the head it should, and the whole system runs soft.

Signs it needs replacing

A diffuser that has cracked, warped or lost its sealing face lets water short circuit back to the impeller eye. Flow drops, the filter pressure reads low, and the cleaner or spa jets go weak while the motor draws the same power as before.

While the pump is apart

Replace the diffuser o-ring at the same time, and consider the impeller and a seal and gasket kit if the pump has a few seasons on it. The same teardown reaches all of them.

What does a diffuser do?
It sits around the impeller and slows the water on its way out. Slowing the flow converts its speed into pressure, which is what pushes water through the filter and back to the pool.
Will it fit a smaller WhisperFlo?
This one is the 3 HP diffuser. Pentair uses a different diffuser for other horsepower ratings, so match the part to the pump.
Is 072928 the same as 072928Z?
Yes. The two numbers refer to the same Pentair diffuser assembly.
What else should I replace while the pump is open?
The diffuser o-ring, and usually the impeller and a seal and gasket kit. The same teardown reaches all of them, so doing them together saves a second job.
