What the diffuser does
The impeller throws water outward at speed. The diffuser wraps around it and slows that water down on its way into the volute, which turns velocity into pressure. Without a good diffuser the pump spins and moves water, but it does not build the head it should, and the whole system runs soft.
Signs it needs replacing
A diffuser that has cracked, warped or lost its sealing face lets water short circuit back to the impeller eye. Flow drops, the filter pressure reads low, and the cleaner or spa jets go weak while the motor draws the same power as before.
While the pump is apart
Replace the diffuser o-ring at the same time, and consider the impeller and a seal and gasket kit if the pump has a few seasons on it. The same teardown reaches all of them.
