What the seal plate does
The seal plate is the wall between the motor and the wet end. The motor shaft passes through it, and the mechanical shaft seal sits in its bore. Everything about the part is a compromise between heat on one side and chlorinated water on the other, which is why it wears in ways the rest of the pump does not.
Why the resistant version
Salt chlorinated pools and ozone systems are harder on pump components than a conventional chlorine pool. Pentair offers this ozone and salt resistant seal plate for those installations. If your pump is on a salt system, matching the part to it is the difference between a repair that lasts and one you repeat.
Before you order
Replacing the shaft seal without checking the plate is a common mistake. If the seal bore is scored, corroded or the plate is cracked, a new shaft seal will not seat properly and the pump will leak again within the season.
