Matching the rating

Impellers are cut for a specific horsepower. The same pump housing takes several different impellers, and fitting the wrong one changes the flow the pump produces. Read the full rate or up rate designation off the pump label rather than going by the horsepower figure alone, since 3/4 HP full rate and 1 HP up rate are the same impeller here.

When to replace it

Weak flow with a clean filter, an empty pump basket and no air in the lid usually means the impeller. Either the vanes have worn away their edges over years of service, or the narrow passages between them have packed with hair, pebbles or leaf fragments.
