The Sta-Rite J3-2 is the copper seal plate insert for pumps built before 1998. It belongs to the seal plate group on the Max-E-Glas and Dura-Glas pumps.
What it does
The insert presses into the seal plate and forms the seat that the shaft seal rides against. It takes constant contact from the rotating half of the seal, so over the years it can score, pit or corrode. When that happens a brand new shaft seal will start weeping within weeks, and the leak gets blamed on the seal rather than the surface it is running on.
The 1998 split
Sta-Rite changed the design at 1998, so this insert is specific to earlier pumps. Date the pump from its label if you can. If the label is long gone, take the seal plate off and compare the old insert against this one before ordering.
