Product details

Pentair 357161 is the quarter inch black wing drain plug used on Pentair and Sta-Rite pump housings. It is also cataloged under the number 154699.

What it does

The plug closes the drain port at the bottom of the pump volute. Pull it and the housing empties, which is what has to happen before a freeze and any time the wet end is opened for service. The wing head means it comes out by hand rather than needing a tool, which matters when the pump sits in a tight equipment enclosure.

The part that goes with it

The plug seals against an o-ring, and that ring is ordered separately. If the pump weeps a slow drip at the drain port rather than the plug being cracked or the wing snapped off, replace the o-ring first. A plug pulled tight against a hardened ring will not seal, and cranking it harder is how the plug body gets broken.

Why does a pump need a drain plug at all?
To empty the volute. Water left in a pump housing over a hard freeze expands and cracks the casing, which turns a two dollar plug into a new wet end.
