Product details

The Pentair 154699 is the 1/4 inch NPT drain plug used across a number of Pentair pumps and filters. It is the genuine Pentair part, the same plug fitted at the factory.

Where it goes

Pentair lists this plug for Challenger high head and high flow pumps, OptiFlo pumps from 3/4 to 1-1/2 HP, and Tagelus top mount sand filters. In each case it closes the low drain port, the one you open to empty the housing for winter or before a service job.

Why they get replaced

Drain plugs are pulled and refitted every closing season, which is exactly how they end up cross threaded, over tightened or simply lost. A plug that no longer seats weeps continuously, and that drip on the pad is often blamed on a shaft seal when the real fix costs a few dollars.

Fitting

Start it by hand so the tapered thread enters square, then snug it down. Do not force a plug that is not turning freely, and check the condition of the seal before you refit.

Does an o-ring come with it?
The source listings disagree on this, so treat the o-ring as something to confirm rather than assume. Pentair also sells the drain plug o-ring on its own if you need one.
Why is my pump dripping at the drain port?
A plug that has been cross threaded, over tightened or left with a hardened seal will weep under pressure. Replacing the plug is far cheaper than chasing it as a seal failure.
