What it seals
The gasket goes between the skimmer face plate and the pool wall. Everything the skimmer draws in passes through that opening, so if the seal behind the face plate has hardened or torn, water gets into the joint instead of down the throat. On a liner pool that shows up as a wet spot or a slow loss that nobody can place, and it is a common reason a pool that holds level in winter starts dropping once the pump runs.
Fitting it
Replace the gasket any time the face plate comes off, since it costs little next to doing the job twice. Bring the screws up evenly and stop at snug. A gasket driven down hard distorts and can leak worse than the one you took out.
