What it does
The relief valve is the deliberate weak point on the water side of a heater. If a closed valve, an airlock or a stuck circuit lets pressure climb while the burner is firing, the relief valve opens and dumps rather than letting the heat exchanger or the plumbing take the load.
When to change it
Relief valves fail toward leaking. Once scale keeps the seat from closing again, the valve seeps continuously and the heater loses water. Replace it rather than capping it, and confirm that 75 PSI matches the rating your heater is specified for.
