The Pentair 473715Z is the 50 PSI pressure relief valve for the Max-E-Therm and MasterTemp heater water system. It is the genuine Pentair replacement.
Why the valve is there
A gas heater can build pressure faster than the plumbing can shed it if a valve is closed against it or the system traps water while the burner is firing. The relief valve is the deliberate weak point: it opens at 50 PSI and dumps rather than letting the heat exchanger or the pipework take the load. It is the last defence, and it is the one part on the heater that should never be bypassed.
When to change it
Relief valves fail toward leaking. Scale and corrosion keep the seat from closing again after it has lifted, so the valve seeps continuously and the heater loses water. If yours weeps, has been lifted repeatedly, or somebody has plugged it, fit a new one. Confirm the 50 PSI rating is the one your heater calls for before you install it.
