Product details

The Sta-Rite 42002-0029Z is the switch membrane for the Max-E-Therm heater control panel, the printed pad that carries the buttons you press to set the heater.

What goes wrong

Membranes fail before the electronics behind them. A button that takes two or three presses to register, or one that has stopped responding entirely while the rest of the panel works, is almost always a worn contact in the membrane rather than a fault on the control board. The membrane is also the seal that keeps moisture out of the switches, so a split or lifted pad is worth changing quickly even if everything still functions.

Before you order a board

On a heater that fires and runs normally but is awkward to operate, the membrane is the cheap thing to rule out first. The control board, the board enclosure membrane panel kit and the terminal board are separate parts on the same electrical system diagram.

That is the classic symptom of a worn membrane. The contact behind the printed button degrades before anything else on the panel does, so change the membrane before condemning the control board.
