What the contactor does
When the heater calls for heat, the contactor is the heavy duty switch that closes and sends 240 V to the heating elements. It carries a lot of current every cycle, so over years of service the contacts pit, weld or stop pulling in. The result is a heater that powers up and shows a call for heat but never actually warms the water.
Fitting
Supplying the wiring with the contactor keeps the replacement straightforward, since the leads are already the correct gauge and length for the ELS chassis. This is 240 V work, so isolate the heater at the breaker and have a qualified technician handle the connections if you are not comfortable in a live panel.
