What the pilot does
On an intermittent ignition device heater there is no standing pilot. When the control calls for heat, the pilot lights first, proves flame, and only then does the main burner open. If the pilot assembly is fouled, corroded or no longer proving flame reliably, the heater locks out and will not fire, which is why it is one of the first parts a tech inspects on a no heat call.
Fuel
This is the natural gas assembly. A propane heater uses a different part, so do not fit this one to an LP unit.
