The U.S. Seal PS201 is a pump shaft seal assembly and the industry standard seal for general pool and spa pump applications. It uses Buna rubber with a graphitic plastic seal face and a white porcelain ceramic piece.
What the shaft seal does
It is the barrier between the wet end of the pump and the motor. Two faces run against each other on the motor shaft, one carried in the pump housing and one on the impeller side, and together they hold water back while the shaft turns. When they wear, water finds its way through and drips out between the pump and the motor, and left long enough it gets into the motor bearings.
Choosing between PS201 and PS-3868
PS201 is the general purpose seal. U.S. Seal does not recommend it for pools or spas running a salt chlorine generator, an ozonator, or a hydrogen peroxide based sanitizer. For those the heavy duty PS-3868 is the better choice, with better resistance to abrasion, heat and chemicals.
