Product details

The U.S. Seal PS-3986 is an extra heavy duty shaft seal assembly for 3/4 inch shafts, specified for saltwater and ozone pools. It is listed as fitting Baker-Hydro and Waterco pumps, and appears in some listings as U.S. Seal Pump Seal 601.

Why the duty rating matters

A shaft seal runs with its two faces pressed together and a film of water between them. Salt and ozone are hard on the elastomers and the faces, and a standard seal in a salt pool will simply not last as long. The extra heavy duty version uses materials chosen for that service.

Recognizing a failed seal

The classic symptom is water dripping from the gap between the motor and the pump body. Left alone it runs back along the shaft into the motor, rusts the bearings and turns a seal job into a motor replacement. If you see rust streaks on the motor face under the seal plate, the seal has been leaking for a while.

Fitting

The seal sits behind the impeller, so the wet end has to come apart to reach it. That makes it worth changing whenever the pump is open for any other reason.

Why a special seal for saltwater?
Salt and ozone attack ordinary seal materials faster. This is the extra heavy duty version specified for those systems.

How do I know the seal has failed?
