Product details

The SuperPro 1000V-9 is the heavy duty version of the 1000 series pool pump shaft seal, built with Viton and sized for a 5/8 inch shaft.

What a shaft seal does

The motor shaft passes through the seal plate to drive the impeller, and the shaft seal is the only thing keeping pump water on the wet side of that hole. It is a two piece assembly: a stationary ceramic seat pressed into the seal plate, and a rotating half that grips the shaft and spins against it. The two faces run against each other with a film of water between them, which is why a seal that has been run dry or run with sand in the water fails early.

When to fit one

Water dripping from between the seal plate and the motor is the classic failed seal. Fit a new one any time the wet end is opened up as well, because a seal that has been pulled off the shaft will not reseat properly. Match the shaft size, which for this part is 5/8 inch.
