Product details

This is the heavy duty version of the standard 5/8 inch pump shaft seal, built with a carbon face and Viton elastomer for pools running salt water or ozone.

Why the upgrade matters

Salt and ozone are hard on ordinary seal materials. Viton and carbon hold up to both, so the seal keeps its face and its elasticity in water that would age a standard AS-1000 or PS-1000 seal early. The dimensions are unchanged, so it drops into the same 5/8 inch shaft position.

What failure looks like

A worn shaft seal leaks between the motor and the seal plate. Left alone, that water tracks down the shaft and into the motor. If the motor has started to scream, water has probably already been inside it, and the motor is likely due for replacement along with the seal.

Installing it

The seal arrives in two pieces: the ceramic seat with its rubber back, and the carbon face with spring and cup. A thin film of silicone on the back of the stainless cup keeps water from weeping past where it meets the plastic seal plate. Keep silicone off the seal face itself, and press the seat until it bottoms out. Always fit a new seal when you take a pump apart.

How is this different from a standard PS-1000 seal?
It is the same 5/8 inch shaft seal dimensionally, built in Viton and carbon for salt water and ozone service instead of the standard materials.
What comes in the box?

Any tips on installing it?
Put a little silicone sealant on the back of the stainless cup before pressing the seat in, which stops water weeping past the cup where it meets the plastic seal plate. Keep silicone off the seal face, and press until it bottoms out.
My pump leaks between the motor and the seal plate, is this the fix?
That is the classic symptom of a failed shaft seal. Deal with it quickly, because water running down the shaft gets into the motor and ruins it. A loud screaming motor usually means the water already got there.
