U.S. Seal PS1000 Shaft Seal Assembly

The U.S. Seal PS1000 is the mechanical shaft seal that keeps water in the wet end of a pool pump and out of the motor. It fits pumps from Polaris, Pentair, Hayward, Astral, Jandy and Waterway, and it replaces a long list of OEM seal numbers including AS1000, VG1000, P55 and S1000.

When you need one

The symptom is water leaking between the motor and the seal plate. Ignored, that water tracks down the shaft into the motor bearings and ruins the motor; a motor that has started screaming has usually already been flooded and needs replacing too. Beyond that, fit a new seal any time the pump is dismantled, since a used seal rarely goes back together dry.

Two pieces

One half is a ceramic seat in a rubber back that presses into the seal plate. The other is a carbon face with a spring and stainless steel cup that rides on the impeller side. The two polished faces running against each other are the seal.

Installing it

Never touch the black carbon face. The easiest way to seat the cup half is a 1 in. coupling, which presses on the cup and lets the seal go into the housing square without contacting the face.
