The Polaris P40 is the genuine OEM o-ring for the shaft on the PB4-60 booster pump. It is a small, inexpensive part that does a job nothing else can do.
Where it sits
The o-ring seals at the shaft inside the pump. When it hardens, flattens or splits, water works past it, and the shaft seal behind it is the next thing to suffer. Most people find it during a seal replacement or a motor swap rather than diagnosing it on its own.
Fitment
It is the PB4-60 booster pump o-ring, the pump used to drive Polaris pressure side cleaners. The same part also appears in the parts breakdowns for the Premier 456 B/N, 555N, 556N and 556 AB series pumps.
Because the pump has to come apart to fit it, this is a part worth ordering before you start rather than after.

When should I replace it?
Any time the booster pump is opened up. Once an o-ring has been compressed and heat cycled it will not seal as well a second time, so it goes back together with a new one.
