What the seal does
The shaft seal sits where the motor shaft enters the wet end. Its two faces run against each other and keep pool water in the volute and off the shaft. When the faces wear or a stray bit of grit scores them, water starts dripping from the joint between the pump body and the motor, and from there it works its way into the motor bearings.
Fitting it
Replace both halves as the matched set they are supplied as. Handle the polished faces by the edges, keep them clean and dry, and never reuse one half against a new one.
