The Hayward SPX1600Z2 is the genuine OEM shaft seal assembly used across the Super Pump, Super II, NorthStar and Max-Flo pump families. It also appears in parts lists for the Max-Flo 1800 and 2800 model pumps and for Leslie Hydramax II pumps.
What the shaft seal does
The motor shaft passes through the back of the wet end to spin the impeller. The shaft seal is the barrier at that crossing, and it is the only thing keeping pool water out of the motor. It is a two piece assembly, a rotating face carried on the shaft running against a stationary face pressed into the seal plate.
The symptom to look for
Water dripping from the gap between the motor and the pump body, often with rust streaks or a crusty deposit under it. Left alone, that water works its way into the motor bearings and turns a cheap seal job into a motor replacement.
While you are in there
The seal is replaced with the impeller off. Since the pump is already apart, it is worth checking the housing gasket, the impeller and the shaft for wear at the same time.
