Why the diffuser matters
The diffuser wraps the impeller and turns the speed of the water leaving the vanes into usable pressure. A cracked or distorted diffuser lets water recirculate instead of moving forward, so the pump sounds normal but the filter gauge and the return flow both drop.
What to look for
Check the face where the impeller runs for cracks, look at the mounting bosses for chips, and see whether the part still seats tightly. Any of those means the diffuser is done.
If you are already replacing the impeller or the shaft seal, do the diffuser at the same time. The pump is apart, the parts wear together, and a new impeller in a worn diffuser will not give you the flow you paid for.
