Why they are sold together
The impeller runs inside the diffuser at a close clearance, and that clearance is what turns motor speed into pressure. Both parts wear. Fitting a new impeller into a diffuser that is already worn opens the gap back up and gives you only some of the flow you were after, so Hayward supplies the two as a kit.
