The Hayward SPX1600PN hand knob kit is the clamping hardware for the strainer cover on Super Pump and Super II pumps. It ships as a set: the swivel nut and the hand knob together.
Why it wears out
The knob is turned by hand every time a basket is emptied, and it sits in sun and pool chemicals the rest of the time. Threads round off, the plastic goes brittle and eventually the cover will not pull down tight. That is when the pump starts drawing air, losing prime or dribbling water at the lid.
Fitting it
Because the kit includes the swivel nut, both halves of the worn assembly get replaced at once. While the cover is off, look at the lid o-ring as well. A tired o-ring and a tired knob usually reach the end together, and replacing only one of them rarely stops the air leak.
