What it does
The seal plate has one important job. It holds the shaft seal in exactly the right place so pool water stays on the pump side and the motor stays dry. If the plate is cracked, warped from heat, or the seal bore is worn or chewed from a previous repair, a brand new seal will still leak, because the seal has nothing true to sit against.
