What the diffuser does
The diffuser sits over the impeller and directs the flow leaving it. Its close fit against the impeller is what stops water circulating back inside the volute instead of going out to the filter. When it cracks or the sealing face wears, the pump keeps spinning but delivers less, and it becomes harder to prime.
Fitting
Diffusers are sized to the impeller, so the horsepower has to match. Since the two parts wear together, look at the impeller while the pump is open rather than closing it up and reopening it a month later.
