The SuperPro 12717 is a round run capacitor rated 30 MFD at 370V, sized for pool equipment motors that use a capacitor of that rating.

What a run capacitor does

Single phase motors need a phase shift to keep torque smooth once they are turning. The run capacitor provides it, and it stays in circuit the whole time the motor runs. That constant duty is why run capacitors age out, and why a motor that has served for years can suddenly hum, draw current and refuse to come up to speed.

Matching the replacement

Capacitance has to match the original, in this case 30 MFD. The voltage rating must be at least as high as the original, and the can shape has to suit the housing or strap on your motor, which is why round and oval versions of the same rating both exist.

Safety

Kill the power at the breaker and discharge the capacitor before disconnecting anything. A capacitor holds its charge after the supply is off, and that stored energy is enough to hurt.

How do I know this is the right capacitor?
Match the rating printed on the old capacitor. This one is 30 MFD at 370V in a round can. Capacitance has to match, and the voltage rating must be equal to or higher than the original.
What is the difference between a run and a start capacitor?
A run capacitor stays in the circuit the whole time the motor runs. A start capacitor gives the motor a kick to get moving and then drops out. They are not interchangeable.
My motor hums but does not start. Is this the fix?
A failed run capacitor is one of the most common causes of that symptom. Look for a swollen top, leakage or a burst case, and test it before replacing other parts.
Is it safe to change myself?
Only with the power off at the breaker and the capacitor discharged. Capacitors store energy after the supply is cut, so they must be discharged safely before the leads come off.
