What a run capacitor does
Single phase motors need a phase shift to keep torque smooth once they are turning. The run capacitor provides it, and it stays in circuit the whole time the motor runs. That constant duty is why run capacitors age out, and why a motor that has served for years can suddenly hum, draw current and refuse to come up to speed.
Matching the replacement
Capacitance has to match the original, in this case 30 MFD. The voltage rating must be at least as high as the original, and the can shape has to suit the housing or strap on your motor, which is why round and oval versions of the same rating both exist.
Safety
Kill the power at the breaker and discharge the capacitor before disconnecting anything. A capacitor holds its charge after the supply is off, and that stored energy is enough to hurt.
