Product details

The Century 629002-001 is the stationary starter switch for single speed A.O. Smith pump motors, with the MSE7 pump given as the listed application. The same part appears under the SAW-25 designation, and 5270-64 is listed as a substitute part number.

How the switch works

A single speed induction motor cannot start on its run winding alone. At rest, the starter switch contacts are closed, which puts the start winding and its capacitor into circuit and gives the rotor the kick it needs. As the motor approaches running speed, the rotating half of the assembly moves and opens these stationary contacts, dropping the start winding back out of circuit. That happens every single time the pump starts.

Why it fails

Contacts that make and break under load every start eventually pit and burn. When they stop closing reliably, the start winding never engages, and the motor hums without turning until the overload trips. Replacing the switch is the fix, and it is a good deal cheaper than a motor.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does a stationary starter switch do?
It is the fixed contact side of a motor start switch. On start up the contacts are closed so the start winding and capacitor are in circuit. As the motor comes up to speed the rotating half moves and opens them, dropping the start winding out.
Is SAW-25 the same switch?
The source lists this part as the SAW-25 replacement stationary switch, and gives 5270-64 as a substitute part number.
Which motors is it for?
Single speed A.O. Smith pump motors. The listed application is the MSE7 pump.
My motor hums but does not spin. Is this the part?
A pitted or burnt starter switch is one of the standard causes. If the contacts no longer close, the start winding never engages and the motor sits there humming until it trips out.
