Quick overview

  • Century part 628318-307 The factory number for this capacitor, listed under the A.O. Smith motor line.
  • Rated 25 MFD at 370 volts Match this rating against the label on the capacitor you are replacing.
  • Motor electrical part A capacitor is what gives a single phase motor the phase shift it needs to turn.
  • A common no start cause A motor that hums, trips or needs a nudge to spin very often has a failed capacitor rather than a failed motor.
  • Higher voltage rating than a start capacitor At 370 volts it is rated well above the 110 to 125 volt start capacitors sold for the same motors.
  • Inspect the old one A swollen top, a leaking case or scorching around the terminals all point at the capacitor.

Product details

Century part 628318-307 is a motor capacitor rated 25 MFD at 370 volts. It is the replacement part for pool pump motors that call out that rating.

Why the capacitor matters

A single phase motor cannot start or hold torque on the line winding alone. The capacitor supplies the phase shift that gets the rotor turning and keeps it turning smoothly. When it fails, the motor usually hums without spinning, trips the breaker, or only starts once the shaft is nudged by hand. Owners often condemn the whole motor at that point when the capacitor is the actual fault.

Before you order

Read the label on the capacitor you are removing and match both numbers, the capacitance in MFD and the voltage rating. This part is 25 MFD, 370 volts. Note that the lower voltage start capacitors sold for the same motors are a different class of part, so the printed rating is what to go by, not the general description.

Capacitors store energy after the power is cut. Switch off at the breaker and discharge the capacitor before working on the terminals, or hand the job to a service technician.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What is the rating?
25 MFD at 370 volts, as printed in the part description. Compare that against the label on the capacitor coming out.
Is this a start capacitor or a run capacitor?
The listing gives only the rating, 25 MFD at 370 volts. The start capacitors sold alongside it are rated 110 to 125 volts, so this is a different class of part. Match the rating and the physical form of the original rather than the name.
How do I know my capacitor has failed?
A motor that hums without turning, trips the breaker, or starts only after the shaft is nudged is the classic sign. A bulged top or a leaking case confirms it.
Can I fit it myself?
Capacitors hold a charge after power is off. Kill the breaker and discharge the capacitor before touching the terminals, or have a service tech do the swap.
