What a start capacitor does

Single phase motors cannot start turning on their own. The start capacitor gives the motor the phase shift it needs to break away from a standstill, then drops out of the circuit almost immediately. Because it lives a hard and brief electrical life on every start, it is one of the first components on a pool pump motor to fail.

Before you order

Match two things: the rating printed on the old can and its physical size, since the replacement has to fit under the same cover. Kill the power at the breaker before opening the motor, and treat a removed capacitor as still charged until you have discharged it.

What does 189/227 MFD mean?
It is the capacitance range of the unit, printed as a spread rather than a single number, which is normal for start capacitors.
Is this a start capacitor or a run capacitor?
Start. It is only in circuit for the instant the motor spins up. Run capacitors stay in circuit and are a different part.
What size is the can?
1-7/16 inches by 2-3/4 inches. Check yours against that before ordering, because the capacitor has to sit inside the existing cover.
My pump hums but will not start. Is this the part?
That symptom points at the start capacitor more often than anything else. Confirm the rating and can size on your old one match before ordering, and have the power off at the breaker before you open the motor.
